2008

Thomas Allen (YLF08)

Thomas Allen (YLF08) dream came true when he got to dress in full football gear at homecoming at Manchester High School. How AWESOME Thomas! Thomas is in the running for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship for his school. He was invited to speak on a panel at VCU’s College 4 U event. Thomas completed the SAT & ACT and has applied to five different colleges with his Mom’s help. He is 39th of a graduating class of 416 this June. Fantastic! Thomas has been nominated to speak at the VA Transition Forum in March in Norfolk.

Thomas Allen (YLF08) was recognized as an Outstanding Student for representing Manchester High School at YLF. He fulfilled his remaining requirement to earn a Standard Diploma this June. He was nominated and won Homecoming King for 2008. You go!, Thomas. He was also nominated King Puff at the Powder Puff Game, but did not win. And Thomas participated in a panel discussion on Self-Determination before the state board of education.

Thomas Allen (YLF08) is now a freshman at Liberty University. He was a nominee of the Chesterfield County Youth Planning and Development in May. He was honored as Student of the Year by VADCDT at the VA Transition Forum in Norfolk this past March and by the superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools.

April Blaha (YLF08)

April Blaha (YLF08) is taking a course in American Sign Language (ASL). Her teacher comments that she has a great attitude, is eager to learn, and is making good progress in learning how to finger spell.

April Blaha (YLF08) is doing well in school, she’s on the honor roll. Way to go April! She is fulfilling her goal of enrolling in college courses while still in high school. She has registered to take her second college course, Public Safety, at Virginia Western Community College. April also entered a Reflections Contest in Art, Literature, and Photography.

April Blaha (YLF08) earned Student of the First Nine Weeks in English. Bravo! She volunteered to assist a special ed class on their field trip to Lee Hi Bowling Lanes.

April Blaha (YLF08) passed her required SOLs to graduate from Patrick Henry H.S.

Rachael Fiel (YLF08)

Rachael Fiel (YLF08) wrote a school essay on her goal to become a better leader. She made her school’s varsity Field Hockey team and was named team captain. “I am very proud of myself.” “I plan to be a great role model for the girls on my team.” She spoke to her skills support class about YLF and how she is more confident of herself because of her YLF experience. She joined a school club called First Priority (a faith based group) and invited everyone to a See You at the Pole gathering where she read a prayer from Luke 11:9 & 10. Also aspiring to be a model, she modeled in a back-to-fashion show featuring young people with disabilities at McArthur Mall in Norfolk, VA. She was interviewed by the Virginia Pilot and is (was) scheduled to be on Cox.

Rachel Fiel (YLF08) applied for the National Leadership, but was not accepted. She was given a Leadership award for her role on her field hockey team. She was elected Secretary of her junior class. She was a sign language interpreter for her sister’s middle school play Where Are You Christmas? “The music instructor was brought to tears.” She was the lead planner of her Junior Ring Dance. She received accommodations for her SATs in March. She earned a 3.13 GPA last report period and was ranked 33 of 336 in her junior class. Way to go, Rachel! Outstanding!

Rachael Fiel (YLF08) received a scholarship to attend the 2009 Self-Determination Youth Summit (SDYS) in Norfolk, VA. She participated on the Young Leaders Share panel at the VA Transition Forum. She helped to create the SDYS’ Youth Credo of Support. She modeled at McArthur Mall in Norfolk. She enjoyed getting dressed up and telling people what she was wearing. She actively participated in her IEP and made plans for the future. She earned the honor roll at Kings Fork H.S. She learned to do hair highlights in cosmetology class at Pruden Center for Ind. & Tech.

Keagan Giles (YLF08)

Keagan Giles (YLF08) continues his commitment to help at the local food bank. Thanks for dedication Keagan!

Keagan Giles (YLF08) Did an oral presentation for Richmond’s Resources for Independent Living, Inc. Summer Youth Closing Program.

Keagan Giles (YLF08) visited a recycling center and sorted bottles, newspapers and boxes into their respective bins. He also took collected can goods to the Foodbank and watched being weighed. He would like to put the cans on the shelf on his next visit.

Keagan Giles (YLF08) cares for the cats and dogs at the Richmond SPCA while they wait for a home. He assisted with the donation of 51lbs of food and water at the local Food Bank.

Keagan Giles (YLF08) helped hand out offering envelopes at church. He continues to volunteer with the SPCA and Food Bank. He assisted with the 95lbs of food and water donated in January.

Keagan Giles (YLF08) continues to volunteer with the SPCA and the Food Bank. He assisted in donating 85lbs of food and water to those in need.

Keagan Giles (YLF08) continues to show good citizenship in caring for Richmond’s homeless cats and dogs at the SPCA and people in need of food and water from the area food bank. And he helps to separate and recycle bottles and jars, phonebooks, newspapers, and junk mail at a local recycling drop off.

Megan Hughes (YLF08)

Megan Hughes (YLF08) is an active participant with the Young Life Capernaum Leadership Development assisting campers, attending meetings, serving meals and cleaning up, and helping to coordinate parties. She also finds time to be a volunteer babysitter.

Ashley Johnson (YLF08)

Ashley Johnson (YLF08) not only found love and friends to keep in touch with at YLF, but has been inspired to start a small group of self advocates from her neighborhood-encouraging them to speak up for themselves. She also: established a dance crew hoping to compete, attended a church she’s interested in, learned how to fix bikes and mopeds with her uncle, is looking for a job and car, and is learning how to do household chores on her own. Great Job! Ashley. Keep up the good work.

Ashley Johnson (YLF08) Continues to look and apply for jobs in Harrisonburg. She learned how to change guitar strings and how expensive it is to do.

Brittany Lacy (YLF08)

Brittany Lacy (YLF08) shared her YLF experience at the VA Board for People with Disabilities Board Meeting in September.

Warren Newell, Jr. (YLF08)

Warren Newell, Jr. (YLF08) YLF's 2008 singing sensation, sang for James Kidd's 80th Birthday party. He will be making a CD next month. You Go, Warren! Can’t wait to hear you on the airways and see your CD on store shelves.

Warren Newell, Jr. (YLF08) spoke at Union Branch Baptist Church about first time voting. Helped to raise money for youth to attend 4-H camp. Sang for a youth benefit program at Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Warren Newell, Jr. (YLF08) sang at a Catholic Church for a New Years service and with the youth choir at First Baptist. Church Disputanta. He is an honor roll student at Prince George High School.

Warren “Hollywood” Newell, Jr. (YLF08) has been putting his singing talent to much use. He has been singing at various church functions, during half-time at an Eastcoast Bowl Football Game, for a military holiday ball at Fort Lee, and with his school’s concert choir bringing in the holiday spirit with the student body. Mr. Hollywood was elected President of the Prince George High School Choir.

Warren Newell, Jr. (YLF08) participated in a choir festival at Hanover H.S. He was chosen as first alternate tenor to represent district three in an all state choir.

Warren Newell (YLF08) singing resume continues to grow: the Peanut Festival in Emporia, with his JPE choir, and the upcoming 2nd Street Festival (October 3rd) here in Richmond with 4-H MBC.

Warren Newell (YLF08) continues to add to his list of singing engagements: May, 13th Annual Tri-City Law Enforcement Memorial Breakfast; June, 4-H Congressional Open Ceremony in Blacksburg, VA; August, funeral service for Ms. Dorothy Downey; and the 3rd Anniversary of Octave Praise in September.

Ibem Obasi (YLF08)

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) donated blood during the 2010 winter season. He volunteered 14 hours of his time to cooking and serving food to people who were homeless and staying at his church in Fairfax.

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) dedicated himself to a 10 day mission in St. Petersburg, Florida helping senior citizens do various projects. His witness commented that he is “An amazing and talented young man.”

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) is a part of his church’s (Fairfax Presbyterian Church) ushering team helping to handout bulletins, take up offerings, and keep the church in order. Ibem helped his older neighbors clean up their porches and lawns. They consider him their God-send. Great work, Ibem!

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) participated in his church’s annual clean up by raking and collecting leaves.

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) donated blood for INOVA blood drive. He participated in a food drive at Fairfax Presbyterian Church. And he helps neighbor, Mary Donnal, keep her property maintained and beautiful.

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) - helped to load and deliver mulch for a spring fundraising event of his church. He helped with the set up and serving of breakfast Easter weekend at his church. Assistive with the “We Are the Change 2009” fundraiser in Ivory Park, raising $10,000 for orphans with AIDS in S. Africa. Ibem is a blessing to elderly neighbor, Mary Donnal, whom he helps upkeep her home and carry things to heavy for her.

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) assisted in the creation and distribution of school packets for his school, Annadale High School.

Ibem Obasi (YLF08) participated in the fall food drive in hometown Fairfax- sorted and prepared bags of non-perishable food items for delivery to needy families.
Kimberly Walters (2003) - is in her first year of law school at Columbia Law in New York City.

Joseph Ragland (YLF08)

Joseph Ragland (YLF08) Collected, sorted, and delivered food for the Food Bank. He participated in a food drive by asking for donations. Way to get involved Joseph!

Joseph Ragland (YLF08) did a great job sharing his YLF experience at the VA Board for People with Disabilities Board Meeting in September.

Joseph Ragland (YLF08) stays busy with various volunteer activities; he helped vendors set up merchandise for viewing at an Arts Around The Park event at U of R in September. He was/is a parking attendant for Godwin’s Football games. During the month of October, he made blankets, greeting cards, and dental goodie bags at Children’s Hospital and helped register, provide snacks, and cleaned up for the American Cancer Society. In December, he planned, sorted, and priced items for sale at Holiday Store. He helped the Kiwanians with their peanut sale at John Rolfe Ukrop’s. He attended College 4 U at VCU. He moved merchandise from warehouse to warehouse for Embrace Richmond Warehouse. And he assisted with story and tea time at the Children’s Museum where he also helped to set up and clean up.

Joseph Ragland (YLF08) socialized and danced with seniors at the American Grandstand Senior Citizen Dance at Godwin H.S. in April. He helped with games, rides, and other booths at a festival at Gayton Elementary School. He volunteered at the Central VA Food Bank assembling and staking boxes and cleaned storage containers.

Marcus Reed (YLF08)

Marcus Reed (YLF08) was accepted into Old Dominion University’s ODUReady program and will be graduating 2011.

J.B. Rintels (YLF08)

J.B. Rintels (YLF08) accepted an invitation to speak at an Autism Conference by Commonwealth Autism Services. He has been busy with this year’s elections donating his time to volunteer for the Obama campaign at their headquarters in downtown Charlottesville and going door to door to register voters.

J.B. Rintels (YLF08) auditioned for a school play and got the part! He’ll be putting in many rehearsal hours.

J.B. Rintels (YLF08) completed the National Youth Leadership Forum survey. He visited WCATV television studio and witnessed how production works. He was inspired by a movie on global warming called The Eleventh Hour and took things to the recycling plant and to Goodwill.

J.B.  Rintels (2008) participated with other YLF alumni in his area in telling the Special Department and transition counselors about YLF. He wrote a 500 word article about his YLF experience for a disabilities newsletter. He went door to door to register people to vote. He attended a film workshop for the upcoming Sprout Film Festival which features films for and about people with disabilities. And he wrote an essay to attend the Virginia Transition Forum in Norfolk. Keep Up the Great Work, J.B.!

J.B. Rintels (YLF08) made arrangements to go to the movies with a friend. Way to go JB! He helped informed the public of a canned food drive by handing out flyers and he sorted the cans.

J.B. Rintels (YLF08) participated in an audience interactive play in Rochester, NY. He performed at the Missoula Theater for Children in hometown Charlottesville. He applied to the 2010 Self-Determination Youth Summit.  He attended college night at Monticello High and applied to a few colleges. He is working out one hour per week at home. He has committed to attending the monthly meetings of  the National Honor Society and National English Honor Society at Monticello.

Petya Rogers (YLF08)

Petya Rogers (YLF08) had fun selling desserts at a fireman’s carnival in her hometown of Stuarts Draft.

Petya Rogers (YLF08) Passed her Geometry SOL!!! She helped set up and host her church’s lawn party.

Petya Rogers (YLF08) helped cook Thanksgiving dinner at her church. She gave her third donation to Locks of Love. She had been growing her hair for two years to donate to them. Thanks Petya for your commitment and generosity.

Katie E. Smith (YLF08)

Katie E. Smith (YLF08) got her Gold Award Project approved by the Girl Scout Council. She finished her summer reading requirements for Honors English 12. “The books were pretty tough to get through, but I did it! YAY!” Way to go “Silky Smooth”! Katie also toured one of her college choices, Radford University.

Katie E. Smith (YLF08) was nominated for Snow Queen of Floyd County H.S. She applied to Roanoke and Bridgewater College and was accepted to both! She also applied for verbal scholarship “The Voice of Democracy” and placed 2nd out of 6 applicants. Good going, Katie! She got the lead in an One Act play competition. She is working with first year drama students and teaching them about threatre.

Katie E. Smith (YLF08) was accepted to Radford University. Alright, Katie! She is writing a Christmas play for children who attend her church. She is finalizing her Girl Scout Gold project. She is also learning to operate a motorized scooter for her use at college.

Katie E. Smith (YLF08) is happy to receive a B average in her AP Biology II class. She performed a puppet show ­­for 10-15 elementary students to complete the requirements to achieve a Girl Scout Gold. Katie toured Bridgewater College where she was accepted.

Katie E. Smith (YLF08) really worked hard to finish with an “A” in Biology II. She placed 1st in district Forensics meet. She is doing a Prose piece on Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper. She placed third out of twelve in the regional forensics meet and qualified for the state level. She didn’t think she’d get that far and is very excited.

Cameron Wilmer (YLF08)

Cameron Wilmer (YLF08) since YLF, he helped unfortunate families build and paint parts of their homes to make them a better and safer place to live. This took place in Mannington, West Virginia for 7 days. In August 2008, he was selected for the Big Brother Big Sister program for his school- whereby selected juniors and seniors help freshmen transition from middle school to high school. In November 2008, his church’s youth group participated in T.O.P's (Teens Oppose Poverty). helping to feed Richmond’s homeless. He was inducted in the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society this past March. In January 2009, he went with the Big Brother Big Sister program to a local elementary and participated in the national "mix it up day" where they helped children interact with other children beside their friends. He made A, B honor role first semester and had a 3.41 unwieghted GPA. He spoke at Western Albemarle High School to Special Ed teachers about YLF and how it was an amazing experience and that all of the teachers should tell their students about the program. He was chosen to attend the VA Transition Forum in Norfolk. He supported YLF alumni who participated on the Young Leaders Share discussion panel and helped to create the Youth Credo of Support presented at the forum. He created a mentorship program at his school for underclassmen with disabilities. He created a PowerPoint for his IEP meeting for the first time. He baby-sits a six grader with autism on regular bases and is a big influence on him. He volunteers to walk dogs in the neighborhood. He worked with the Transition coordinator at his school to get case managers aware of disability needs. He tried to get his school involved in the future for the disability month next school year. In pursuant of his dream to be a Police Officer, he did an internship with an officer.

Cameron Wilmer (YLF08) was accepted to Longwood University where plans to pursue a career in law enforcement.

2007

Adam Amick (YLF07)

Adam Amick (YLF07) has got the school spirit! Since joining the National Honor Society and the SCA at Oscar Smith High School, he has participated in a canned food drive, sold spirit beads and decorated his school for homecoming week. Also as a member of the SCA, he worked with his local Parks and Recreation Department to sponsor a dance for senior citizens. That's what I call tying your school and community together and getting involved. Great job, Adam!

Adam Amick (YLF07) represented his school and expanded on his leadership skills by participating in a VHSL Leadership Conference. He was further elected, Historian of the 2008-2009 School Year, as a member of the National Honor Society. And he did a fine job, moderating the panel of YLF Alumni who spoke to an audience of parents, other youth, and educators about their school transition experiences at the VA Transition Forum in Roanoke, VA this past March. He also co-facilitated small group discussions among youth of the Self-Determination Summit at VTF. Keep up the GREAT work Adam!

Adam Amick (YLF07) visited Richmond recently to spend the day touring his first college choice, University of Richmond. While there, he sat in on classes and was interviewed. Also while in Richmond, Adam went to St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry gave his Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death speech.

Julia Blitz (YLF07)

Julia Blitz (YLF07) is excited about her future plans for college. She has taken her SATs and started applying to colleges. She has applied to and toured the college of Marymount University. She says, “The campus is beautiful and fits her like a glove.” Julia and other alumni will be participating in a panel discussion about their YLF experience and transitioning process from high school to college and independent living at the 2008 Virginia Transition Forum in March in Roanoke, Virginia.

Julia Blitz (YLF07) won two awards for her participation in a telethon fundraiser that benefited the Jewish Community. Given extra time, she took her SATs. She co-leads a small group of youth in break out sessions during the Self Determination Youth Summit of the Virginia Transition Forum in Roanoke, VA. She was also among a panel of YLF Alumni who spoke with honesty and passion to other youth, parents, and educators about their high school transitioning experience and the YLF. Julia has taken an interest in her IEP and is speaking up for herself. She has also spoken up for others whom she feared were being harmed. She is getting fit with a nutritionist and yoga instructor. And she received a good annual review and raise from her employer.

Julia Blitz (YLF07) lead the Passover Sedar at her home and instead of getting a prize for finding the "Hidden Matzo" she asked that a donation be made in her name to the Jewish Institute Against Domestic Abuse. How honorable of you Julia. What a wonderful gesture. She made the A/B honor roll for the third quarter. Awesome! She has also made her nutritional plan in preparation of the prom.

Parveen Kaur (YLF07)

Parveen Kaur (YLF07) is excelling in school and giving back to her community. She earned all A's and B's during the first quarter. Way to go!!! Setting her sights on her future, she applied to two Virginia colleges on her own- University of Virginia and James Madison University. Great Choices! Parveen lent her helping hands to preparing food for visitors of a (her) Indian Church.

Emily Lambert (YLF07)

Emily Lambert (YLF07) YLF’s most animated stage performer, performed a solo for district 12 choir auditions. Bravo! She also volunteered her time to working with children with disabilities and helping Meals on Wheels prepare box meals to be delivered to persons who are elderly.

Elizabeth Pappas (YLF07)

Elizabeth Pappas (YLF07) was invited to speak at UVA about her experience at YLF. She inquired about an assistive technology tool to help a fellow schoolmate with a disability grip a pencil. She attended and participated in her own 504 meeting for the first time. Way to Learn, Empower, Achieve, and Demonstrate-LEAD!

Elizabeth Pappas (YLF07) was invited to join the National English Honor Society! The president of the American Academy of Pediatrics asked her to be their official photographer! She has spoken to schoolmates about YLF and other young people and families at this year's VA Transition Forum in Roanoke, VA. She also shared her transition experiences in a panel discussion at the forum and was a co-leader of a small group participating in the Self Determination Youth Summit. "It was awesome! I came back ready to change the world." She invited friends to the county fair to see pictures she took. She has taken in a stray kitten that's been teaching her responsibility and keeping her on task with her household chores.

Elizabeth Pappas (YLF07) was accepted to Christopher Newport University and is on the waiting list at James Madison. Elizabeth was very excited to share that she was captured on the news this summer when a reporter asked her how she felt about seeing The First Lady and her family in Charlottesville.

Elizabeth Pappas (YLF07) is getting settled in at the University of Mary Washington. She is finding that her professors are very willing to accommodate her needs. Elizabeth steps up to leadership helping her fellow college mates learn basic Braille and ASL. She contacted VBPD staff for help getting ASL established at UMW after meeting some resistance.

Steve Phillips (YLF07)

Steve Phillips (YLF07) is showing off his "Can Do" spirit. He helped put up homecoming parade flyers in South Lake High School and walked a half a mile in the parade during his first-time visit to the parade. Awesome Steve! He participated in a Nationwide Abilities Expo and learned how to get around on the metro without his parents. As a member of DECA (an association for marketing students), he attended a NBA (Wizards & Phoenix Suns) marketing, promotion, and information session for NBA jobs. He is one step closer to graduating after passing his English writing SOLs. And he is now a proud registered voter ready to cast his vote after completing an online registration. How impressive, Steve.

Steve Phillips (YLF07) represented his school, South Lakes High School, in a countywide redistricting meeting where over 3,000 students, parents, and concerned citizens came together to discuss increasing their schools enrollment. On the path of getting ready for college, Steve took the SATs and is awaiting the results. Steve voted for the first time in the Virginia Primary. "I am proud that I voted and expressed my opinion." Steve demonstrated leadership by sharing his swimming technique with a friend.

Steve Phillips (YLF07) is looking for Job! He attended the Greater Dulles Area Student Job Fair and distributed his resume and business cards. He displayed good introduction skills and handshakes. He also represented students with physical disabilities at a student job fair in Fairfax County. Steve created an amazing presentation for his leadership class on leadership and students with disabilities. It was quite the conversation piece among his classmates. Way to go!

Steve Phillips (YLF07) opened his first bank account. He evaluated the best banking options for him and signed all the paperwork.

Steve Phillips (YLF07) attended an Open House at George Mason University and toured the campus. He received an “I Voted” sticker after completing the entire process with proper ID and paperwork. Steve co-moderates a weekly one hour Male Mentoring discussion at the Reston Teen Center. Awesome, Steve!

Steve Phillips (YLF07) was recognized by staff at the Reston Teen Center and awarded in the category of Accepting Responsibility at Fairfax County Dept. of Community and Recreation Services’ annual event Youth and Young Adults “Our Rising Stars”. He was nominated for his great attitude and willingness to share his ideas with staff and teens. He organizes and leads a male mentoring group at RTC. He joined an inaugural power soccer team for people using power wheelchairs in Northern Virginia and attended a ceremony that included 115 youth recipients and their families from across Fairfax. Outstanding, Steve!

Steve Phillips (YLF07) received the highest award of his school, South Lakes High School Staff Award. He was the Master of Ceremony at communications fair for area children. He prepared a skit and introduced presenters. He was accepted and will be attending at Northern VA Community College this fall.

Steve Phillips (YLF07) is loving his college experience at Northern VA Community College. He is currently majoring in General Studies, but is considering Early Childhood Development as a prerequisite to Special Education. He is updating his Personal Leadership Plan (PLP) to reflect his latest experiences and goals.

Steve Phillips (YLF07) has devoted a number of volunteered hours to Fairfax County Public Schools in speaking engagements and student teaching. He was a guest speaker at a teacher’s seminar designed to help general educators learn how to understand and address students receiving special education services. Teachers appreciated his sense of humor and frank answers to their many questions. He was keynote speaker at a RATE (Real Assistive Technology for Everyone) conference attended by assistive technology professionals. He was a role model to students receiving special education at Marshall Roads Elementary School. Steve attended Fairfax County’s Disability Mentoring Day in October and participated in sessions on resume writing and job hunting.

Steve Phillips (YLF07) continues to sharpen his skills in public speaking, to do research in his undergraduate coursework, and to take the lead in paradaptive power soccer. He has done presentations on disability and accomodations, submitted written reports on Cerebral Palsy (what it is and the different forms of it), and on Special Education and the need to tie education with competitive employment opportunities for graduating students with disabilities. In December Steve became Captain of the NOVA Power Soccer team. He recently represented the team at a MDA fair.

Rose Pleskow (YLF07)

Rose Pleskow (YLF07) Learning how to save someone’s life, Rose became certified in both child and adult CPR. She made districts beating the time of seven girls. Congratulations Rose!

Rose Pleskow (YLF07) received the Scholastic Achievement Award for earning a 3.7 GPA during her 2006 school year at South Lakes High School. She participated in a fundraiser to spark the establishment of her family's new campground. How exciting!
Matthew Shapiro (Alumni 2007) - continue to "make the grade" ending the first semester with an overall G.P.A of 3.0. He also continues to be active in school as Editor in Chief of his school newspaper, The Gavel and managing the varsity basketball team. Matt represented his school in a countywide Student Congress with Superintendent, Fred Morton.

Macy Rucker (YLF07)

Macy Rucker (YLF07) spoke to 300 members of Costal Community Church, her church's congregation, about a mission trip she went on. Way to get over the jitters of public speaking! She also participated in a leadership class given by her church's youth group. She and friends worked hard to clean and feed horses and their stables at a local children's farm- Bluebird Gap Farm. And finally, Macy achieved one of her PLP PATH goals of getting her learner's permit. Drive safely Macy! Macy continues to develop her leadership skills. Over the summer she helped to organize a children's camp and become buddies to two campers. She also continues to make strides in accomplishing her PATH goals by driving cautiously on main roads and highways and excelling in school. She is participating in an off campus Dental Assistant course and earned a high A on her first dental test. And while writing is not one of Macy's strongest attributes, she earned a B on her summer reading essay, the biggest essay of the school year. Keep up the GREAT Job, Macy!

Macy Rucker (YLF07) is on the go! While maintaining all As the first nine weeks of dental school, she babysits three small children, performs in her school’s Christmas play, and delivers her YLF testimony with emotion and clarity to her church’s youth group.

Macy Rucker (YLF07) convinced her Mom to get her teeth cleaned in her dental class. Her Mom commented that she (Macy) was, "Professional and conscientious." She performed an adult drama in front of her church's congregation of 200 people.

Matthew Shapiro (YLF07)

Matthew Shapiro (YLF07) met with case manager to discuss his IEP-concerns about transitioning to college. Matt became part of steering committee to establish an on campus student congress where students can voice concerns about issues at JR Tucker H.S. Matt made it through his first SAT test. He chaired and conducted his own IEP. Lead on Matt! Lead on!

Matthew Shapiro (YLF07) has been very busy since graduating from YLF. He scored two goals in an exhibition game for his power wheelchair soccer team. He sold lemonade for Anthem Lemonade with proceeds going to cure childhood cancer. He followed YLF staff suggestion and sent his Senator, Walter Stosch, a copy of his testimony read at Capital Day. He scored two more goals for his soccer team before back surgery. As Editor in Chief of his school newspaper, Matt helped to get a back to school issue to the printer two days early. Matt also met with Tony Gentry of VCU to test the creation of Super School video game.

Matthew Shapiro (YLF07) still advocating for patient lifts in hospitals, sent his testimony to Former Governor Kaine. He held the first staff meeting of his school's (JR Tucker H.S.) newspaper The Gavel. And he attended Henrico County Public School Student Congress at the Jefferson Hotel. There, he and other students meet with superintendent, Fred Morton.

Matthew Shapiro (YLF07) is now managing the varsity basketball team of his school (JR Tucker High School). He earned a 3.5GPA the first nine weeks although he missed many days recouping from surgery. Matt was featured in Richmond Arc Magazine demonstrating power wheelchair sports for Sportables.

Matthew Shapiro (YLF07) earned three As and two Cs the first semester at Tucker H.S. He attended the 2009 Self-Determination Youth Summit (SDYS) in Norfolk, VA. Represented Tucker H.S. at the Columbia Scholastic Journalism Conference at Columbia University. He wrote a rebuttal letter to a Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter who said Tucker H.S. was a school no one wanted to attend. He was a blogger for Tucker on InRich.com (Richmond Times-Dispatch on-line newspaper). He leads an electric wheelchair soccer team at Deep Run Rec. Center.

Alexander Snyder (YLF07)

Alexander Snyder (YLF07) is racing forward with his plans for the future while volunteering at the finish line of many benefit races. He attended a College Access Network-Workshop hosted by his school (Warren County H.S.) which explored the possibilities available for students with disabilities at colleges. He represented his school at a Transition Planning Grant Committee Meeting. He participated in a month long program (Transition 2008) sponsored by the VA Dept. for the Blind and Vision Impaired in Richmond which included vocational training, life skills, work experience, and independent living. As if he wasn't busy enough planning for life after high school, Alexander found the time to volunteer his early mornings to time and cheer on runners at the finish line of the Special Olympics Benefit 5k, Festival of Leaves 5k, Greasy-Gooney 10k, and will be volunteering with the Shenandoah Valley Runners running club this winter. "Good Grief", Alexander! "You sure got a lot of get up and go".

Alexander Snyder (YLF07) kicking his way to the top, was promoted to Karate Brown Tip, a major promotion in the adult system. He has been invited to train for the Black Belt. Great Achievement!

Alexander Snyder (YLF07) participated the Rise to Action Conference in Washington, DC-a conference for young adult cancer survivors and their families. He attended the employment and education session.

Alexander Snyder (YLF07) graduated from Warren County High School! Congratulations, Alex! He met with his DRS counselor to discuss work placement and training. He has been participating in activities to build his independent living skills- cooking and getting involved in activities on his own. Way to go!

Alexander Snyder (YLF07) is in training for his Black Belt in Karate. He is learning to use his local transit system independently, volunteering at the library, and actively looking for a job with the help of his DRS counselor. Good Luck, Alex!

Alexander Snyder (YLF07) is participated in life and employment skills training at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center. He went snow tubing in January at a Young Adults with Cancer Weekend retreat.

Alexander Snyder (YLF07) continues to give of his time volunteering one day a week at each of these locations: the LynnCare Nursing Home, Front Royal Visitors Center, and Warren County Government Center. With the help of the Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired, Alex started working at McDonalds on a trial basis. He hopes to be offered a part-time job there. In February, he spoke before Warren County's Board of Supervisors and The Kiwanis Club in support of the Special Olympics. Good for you Alex!

Taylor Werner (YLF07)

Taylor Werner (YLF07) endured three weeks of intensive physical therapy in Keego Harbor, Michigan to improve his physical independence. At home, he prepared his own lunch (chicken nuggets, fruit, and drink) with minimal assistance. Taylor used his advocacy know how and experience in writing to write a letter to the editor of the Loudoun Eastern addressing the need for a Recreational Center for teens with disabilities.

Charlotte Woodward (YLF07)

Charlotte Woodward (YLF07) spent her summer getting ready for 11th grade Geometry. She went to the library and checked out the book "Geometry for Every Kid" by Janice Van Cleave. She and her Mom read through all twenty-five chapters of the book. Spending approximately twenty to thirty minutes reading through and doing most of the exercises of each chapter, Charlotte proudly accomplished her goal of finishing the book before the end of summer. Way to meet your challenge (math) head on! Your teacher must have been excited to hear of what you did to prepare.

Charlotte Woodward (YLF07) - is keeping in touch with friends she made at YLF through school and home. She talked with her teachers and principal about starting a Best Buddies program at her school, Fairfax High School. She has succeed in earning an academic letter, becoming a member of the Model United Nations Club at her school and winning the Verbal Award at a recent Model UN conference, and she became a registered voter. After reading a review in the Washington Post of a new restaurant, Villa Mozart Restaurant, in her area that was not accessible, she wrote the restaurant owner and asked that their restaurant be made accessible for herself and others with disabilities. The chef wrote her back saying the review was incorrect and invited her to have a complementary meal to celebrate her advocacy. "I feel very proud of myself! Also, I just hoped that the disabled would enjoy eating there!" Way to go Charlotte. You should be proud of yourself. We certainly are.

2006

Parker Harrison (YLF06)

Parker Harrison (YLF06) has been accepted to Old Dominion University which was one of his goals! Congratulations Parker! He also participated as the coach for his Lacrosse team this past fall. Keep up the great work Parker!

Jennifer Holden (YLF06)

Jennifer Holden (YLF06) is a member of her school's Service Corps. Jennifer expressed her appreciation to the teachers at her school by serving them breakfast.On January 31, 2007, Jennifer traveled to Richmond with a group called "Best Buddies." They met with Former Governor Tim Kaine and State legislators to ask them for their support in funding the Best Buddies program. Way to go Jennifer! Jennifer has also been busy assisting the teachers in the Sunday School Kindergarten class as a "teacher's aide." She provides assistance with things such as arts and crafts, and snack time.

Celeste Gamble (YLF06)

Celeste Gamble (YLF06) started her new job at Subway on November 27, 2006. Congratulations Celeste! Celeste also continues to share her wonderful talents of singing in the church choir as well as praise dancing. On December 12th, Celeste was presented with her high school class ring, always a fun experience! Celeste worked very hard last semester and brought up all her grades on her report card. Keep up the great work Celeste!

Justin Gantz (YLF06)

Justin Gantz (YLF06) made the wrestling team at his High School this month! Congratulations Justin! One of Justin's major accomplishments last year was when he traveled to Mississippi to assist them with cleaning up after the hurricane. Way to go Justin! He also attended a winter retreat with his church.

Anna Greer (YLF06)

Anna Greer (YLF06) has been keeping herself very busy with quilting and working out in the morning before school! Anna also shares with us that she recently became certified in CPR. Congratulations Anna! She has also been very busy applying for different universities around the State of Virginia. Anna also traveled to Richmond to visit VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University.) Keep up the great work Anna!

Daniel Milner (YLF06)

Daniel Milner (YLF06) did an outstanding job of presenting to the Blue Ridge Care Connection for Children Advisory Committee on his personal experience with the Youth Leadership Forum. In a thank you letter sent from Care Connection, Daniel was described as an "articulate and poised speaker." We are so proud of you Daniel! Thank you for sharing your experience with others! Daniel was also recently inducted into the National Honor Society.

Emilia Prokop (YLF06)

Emilia Prokop (YLF06) has picked up an apartment guide, talked with Accotink Alternative about "Write Out Loud", is familiarizing herself with her computer, and has started a sign language class at the Endependence Empowerment Center. She sure is keeping busy!

2005

Rachel Bishop (YLF05)

Rachel Bishop (YLF05) wants to make sure that other high school students have the opportunity to participate in the YLF. Rachel tells us, "I was afraid that people who could benefit from the YLF were not hearing about the program because they were not in special education. So, when I got back from the YLF this summer I decided I was going to take charge and spread the word myself". Rachel springs to action with a plan, "I'm planning a promotional presentation. The tentative date is November 1. I plan for the presentation to last one hour. I will start with an opening containing the basic details about the YLF and then show the video from the year when I was a delegate. After the video, I will tell the students about my experience, what I got from the YLF, and what the application process involves. I will then have a question and answer period." This shows that Leaders of Tomorrow really do Rise to the Challenge! Keep up the great work Rachel!

Rachel Burchard (YLF05)

Rachel Burchard (YLF05) shared the knowledge she gained at the YLF with a parent of a child with a disability who didn't know her rights. Rachel says "I wanted to help someone else advocate for themselves." Good job Rachel!

Rachel Burchard (YLF05) was the only student to receive 100% on the French Quiz. Rachel interviewed for a promotion at the newspaper where she works. Rachel didn't get the promotion; but, she did make a positive impression when she spoke of her goals for the future. Rachel says this is something she learned at the YLF. Rachel did receive her first photography assignment from the magazine at JMU where she is involved in a mentoring program. Rachel volunteered her time to assist with organizing items to send to the victims of hurricane Katrina. Congratulations Rachel!

Tracey Davis (YLF05)

Tracey Davis (YLF05) volunteered not only her time but also her smile to the Salvation Army by volunteering to ring the bell and collect money to support the organization. She has also been baking for the elderly this holiday season and delivering the food to their homes. Tracey continues to show her compassion and leadership as she supports people within her church and community. We would also like to congratulate Tracey on starting a new part-time job in food service as a lobby attendant.

Tracey Davis (YLF05) Tracey writes to us with her most recent work experience at "KFC" and Long John Silvers as a Lobby Attendant. Manager shares with us that "Tracey does an outstanding job and she is a model employee."

Tracey Davis (YLF05) - shares with us that she has been volunteering at Abner Baptist Church Youth Ministry. Tracey has been singing and dancing for the residents and enjoys reading them scripture. She continues to be a part of the Spirit Club and Step Team at Patrick Henry High School. We've been told that Tracey is always willing to help out, is dependable and always on time! Good job Tracey!

Tracey Davis (YLF05) - graduated from Patrick Henry High School in June 2007 and is now attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in the Culinary Arts Program. Tracey was featured in the October 2007 issue of Richmond Magazine with her mother under the topic of "Careful Consideration".  She continues to make a difference in her community.

Jermese Dudley (YLF05)

Jermese Dudley (YLF05) presented to the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities at their September Board meeting about her experience at the YLF. Jermese was confident and elegant as she informed the Board about what the YLF meant to her and how much she learned about leadership and about herself. She was most inspired by Mike Patrick, the opening keynote presenter, and his positive attitude and perspective on life.

Kailyn Glassmacher (YLF05)

Kailyn Glassmacher (YLF05) has been studying very hard to get her drivers permit. Kailyn is also actively seeking employment in a restaurant and is looking for babysitting opportunities. She recently babysat her younger cousins during which time she taught them some sign language. Good luck Kailyn!

Kailyn Glassmacher (YLF05) - has been busy trying her hand at some new activities. She most recently knitted a purse pocket which was her first knitting project. Even though it is Kailyn's first attempt at knitting, the purse is said to be very professional looking! You must be a natural Kailyn! Kaylin also signed up for the Latin Club. Good Luck Kailyn!

Amy Oulette (YLF05)

Amy Oulette (YLF05) wrote a letter to the YLF staff sharing her "outstanding experience" at the Youth Leadership Forum. Amy says "I feel I learned numerous ideas about leadership and more about my disability rights than I did before the forum. I learned leaders help others, work hard, and plan for their future. One of my lifelong goals was to give parents, friends, teachers, and others with disabilities hope that they can make it in school, higher education, work and society." Amy was also acknowledged at her school with an academic achievement award for her grade point average of 3.3. Wow, you go Amy!

Amy Oulette (YLF05) Amy shares with us that she is currently working on a research paper on the "MMR Debate with Autism." Good luck with your paper Amy. She has also been sharing her singing talent with an audience as she recently auditioned for "District Choir." Amy has gained some of her singing experience with her participation in the Christmas choir concert. Amy continues to give to the community, especially this month when she volunteered at the "Soup Kitchen." We are very proud of you Amy!

Amy Oulette (YLF05) was elected Secretary of the Spanish Club and got to ride in the homecoming float! Amy also helped design the float. Way to go Amy!

Amy Oulette (YLF05) completed a research paper on the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine debate. Sounds very interesting Amy!

Faith Owens (YLF05)

Faith Owens (YLF05) has been researching colleges and has selected a few she would like to visit. Faith visited Bridgewater College, Southern Virginia University and Emory and Henry College. Faith has also just completed her first driving lesson! Good luck Faith.

Faith Owens (YLF05) was featured in the newspapers with her inspiring story "Keeping Faith." In the article, Faith shares how she became empowered at the YLF, overcame her fears and really thought about what she wanted for the future. Since the YLF, Faith has been working towards getting her drivers license with the help of Winchester Rehab Center. Faith demonstrates her advocacy and leadership skills by providing one on one teaching support to students with Autism at a local elementary school. She has also gained public speaking experience when she presented an Independent Study Proposal to a panel of teachers and School Board members.

Faith Owens (YLF05) shares with us that she has been accepted to attend Emory & Henry College as a Bonner Scholar. She has applied for more than 30 scholarships. Good luck with that Faith! Faith has also been working with College Access to spread the word about the YLF. Thank you for your dedication and support Faith!

Charles Pierce (YLF05)

Charles Pierce (YLF05) will graduate from UVA’s apprenticeship program in mason/plaster this May. He hopes to then go on to Piedmont College.

Gabe Rogers (YLF 2005)

Gabe Rogers (YLF 2005) volunteered at the "Hershey's Employee Christmas Party" by assisting with the preparation of the food. Gabe practiced his public speaking skills when he presented on his YLF experience to the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities at their September Board meeting. Gabe spoke about being inspired by Sarah Ruh -- a fellow YLF delegate; and, how wonderful he thought Peggy O'Neal, the closing ceremony presenter, was.

Gabe Rogers (YLF05) is keeping himself busy with many volunteer activities. He was recently a volunteer at the Kiwanians Pancake Breakfast and has been playing bingo with the residents at the Avante Nursing Home. Gabe was also involved with a discussion at the Augusta County Council meeting regarding community improvements. Good work Gabe!

Sara Ruh (YLF05)

Sara Ruh (YLF05) recently presented the importance of accessibility for people with disabilities at E-Learning 2005. She also presented at the EARN Conference to more than seventy five people about being a person with a disability. In addition, Sara spoke about the importance of hiring people with disabilities at President Bush's Freedom Initiative Award Ceremony. Sara recently wrote an excellent article on her experience at the YLF for the Greater Richmond Down Syndrome Association newsletter. Great job Sara!

Sarah Ruh (YLF05) has been very busy these past few months. Sara participated in the ARC March to the Capitol in September and met Former Governor elect Tim Kaine! She played the role of Dr. Andrews in "Inherit the Wind", a play that ran from September through November 2005. Playing Dr. Andrews must have been a good experience for Sara, soon after, she applied for a position as a nurse's assistant at her doctor's office. Good Luck Sara!

Sara Ruh (YLF05) is involved with the SPIRIT Club at school and attends sports events where she cheers for her school. Sara has also been busy recently with babysitting for two children ages three and six years old. Good for you Sara!

Sara Ruh (YLF05) is the first 21 year old among Richmond Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 of young leaders advocating for change in their community. Sara, is also the first person with a disability to be named to the list. Look for her in the October 8th issue. Good for you, Sara. Way to lead!

Sara Ruh (YLF05) was invited by the Princess of Qatar to Qatar to talk about TecAccess this past April. Sara graciously accepted the award for the 2009 Employer of the Year from VA Division on Career Development and Transition for TecAcess at the VA transition Forum in Norfolk the past March.

Heather Sanchez (YLF05)

Heather Sanchez (YLF05) spends her time passing out books to the residents at her grandmother's nursing home. She also helps to tutor a friend in Math so he can increase his grades. Heather recently helped to sell baked good at her school. She also assisted in doing hair and makeup for actors and actress's for a play at school. Sounds like a fun job!

Heather Sanchez (YLF05) - has been volunteering at a local preschool where her Mother works. In addition, she has been singing at a nursing home where her Grandmother lives. Heather shares her kind heartedness by baking cookies for the staff who work with and take care of her Grandmother. Keep up the great work Heather!

Erin Thompson (YLF05)

Erin Thompson (YLF05) has been busy with the new appointment as Director of Best Buddies at her high school. Congratulations Erin! She also participated in the Walk for Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia and has applied for a position on their Board. In addition, she finds time to promote and sell baby booties to raise funds for private specialized programs and also donates some of the booties to the Fairfax Hospital for Children. Erin attended Yearbook Camp for her school where she was very involved in the designing and planning of Paul VI high school "Inspire" yearbook.

Erin Thompson (YLF05) - attends the "Best Buddies" officers meetings twice a month to represent students at Paul VI in the Options Program. Erin has arranged and conducted meetings with the Options Program Director to advocate for herself and others for more challenging classes for next semester. She has been successful in replacing some of her less challenging and repetitive classes with general education classes. Erin recently attended College Quest at GMU (George Mason University) and collected lots of information on various colleges and opportunities. She has recently been asked to join the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia as a committee member focusing on young adult issues. She participated at the George Mason University Life Program which was a seminar for students with disabilities. Erin met with DRS (Department of Rehabilitation Services) representative for an interview who later approved the services that she requested. You have been very busy Erin! Go Erin!

Victoria Wilson (YLF05)

Victoria Wilson (YLF05) recently made honor roll! You go Victoria! In addition Victoria signed up to join the Chesapeake Leadership Forum.

Victoria Wilson (YLF05) - gives of her time by volunteering for the Norfolk SPCA. Victoria also volunteers with the Special Olympic Games at Oscar Smith High School and received a very nice letter from the Special Education Administrator thanking her for the time she had volunteered. Victoria was nominated "Character of Education" for the entire week! She also made Honor Roll and has perfect attendance. Congratulations Victoria! We are so proud of you!

Victoria Wilson (YLF05) - graduated with honors from Oscar Smith High School and has since made the honor roll at Tidewater Community College. She volunteers at the VA Beach SPCA and has joined the Vet Science Club. She is also working toward her goal of becoming a veterinarian by gaining work experience at a veterinary emergency clinic.

2004

Victor Anderson (YLF04)

Victor Anderson (YLF04) helped out the Knights of Columbus by collecting $372.48 outside Ukrops.

Victor Anderson (YLF04) Victor recently became a member of the Student Participating Actively in County Education (S.P.A.C.E.) Committee. He was nominated by the Principal and the Committee to meet with other students in the county once per month. Keep up the great work Victor!

Michael Claude (YLF04)

Michael Claude (YLF04) Congratulations to Micahel on his graduation from high school! Last year Michael gained employment at Radio Shack, however has since received a promotion to the assistant manager which includes higher pay! Way to go Michael! Michael has also been very busy with public speaking activities such as at "Speaker for Blacks in Goverment." Though Michael did not win, he did walk away with an honorable mention and another great experience under his belt. Other speaking engagements have included A.C.T.S.O and N.A.A.C.P.. Keep up the great work Michael!

Mary McAdams (YLF04)

Mary McAdams (YLF04) recently spoke at a budget hearing in front of more than 400 people asking them to support the Disability Resource Center. Mary McAdam was quoted in her local newspaper as saying "The DRC took a girl with a disability and guided her down the golden road where she found her voice and could achieve her goals." We are very excited that Mary McAdam will be return to the Youth Leadership Forum this year as an alumni staff.

Blue achievement cards from Mary McAdam (YLF 2004) continue to pour into our office. Mary hand delivered YLF 2005 applications, brochures and information to her Special Education Department. Thanks for going the extra mile Mary!

Mary McAdam (YLF04) was this year's YLF Alumni of the Year. Mary has been busy over the summer looking for a college that will meet her needs. She has signed up for a tour at James Monroe University and for college day at VCU! Good luck Mary!

Mary McAdam (YLF04) recently became involved in the School Boards Planning Committee which was created to confirm and refine education program concepts for schools in the area. To assist her in this Planning Committee she recently attended a workshop that looked at things from structure of the school buildings to the education provided. Mary has been traveling around the County visiting many school to help her with this very important project. The Disability Resource Center in Fredericksburg just named Mary the "Shining Star" of the month. Congratulations to Mary!

John Motley (YLF04)

John Motley (YLF04) joined the U.S. Army. John will be in boot camp this summer then returning to high school for his senior year. Upon graduation, he should be taking on his first assignment in the summer of 2006. John is the first YLF Alumni (that we are aware of) to join the service. Congratulations John, we are very proud of you!

Christopher Rudder (YLF04)

Christopher Rudder (YLF04) also tried his hand at fundraising with the benefits going to help cancer patients. Christopher shared YLF applications with students in his school.

Christopher Rudder (YLF04) is involved with the Freshman Advisory at Woodside high school. He volunteers his time at Care Plex hospital in Hampton. When he is not volunteering, Chris spends his time performing. Chris performs reggae and is involved in a band called Bajan. His performances include the Woodside Jamz talent show. Christopher most recently got a job working at "Finish Line" shoe store and was also accepted to Virginia Union University. Congratulations Chris; those are huge achievements!

Christopher Rudder (YLF04) received employee of the week award from Busch Gardens for all his hard work. In his great efforts to support the victims of hurricane Katrina, Christopher raised $300! Christopher continues his volunteer work at a local hospital.

Andrew Sleek (YLF04)

Andrew Sleek (YLF04) served in the Sidewalk Sunday School which is an outdoor Christian event for disadvantaged children. He was said to have "served the Ministry to inner city children with great zeal and love for the kids."

Daniel Swift (YLF04)

Daniel Swift (YLF04) is a leader in his school volunteering in the office and helping to put together the school newsletter. Daniel has been actively involved in fundraising activities for Mars Inc. and Virginia Diner selling candy and holiday treats.

Daniel Swift (YLF04) put together a presentation on the YLF and presented it to a Day Treatment Program. Daniel shared his personal experience at the YLF. Daniel agreed to share his experiences in the school newsletter hoping to inspire other people with disabilities

Daniel Swift (YLF04) continues to stay very involved with activities at his church. Daniel volunteered as an usher for church and also gave testimony to the Youth group.

Daniel Swift (YLF04) - continues his work with the "Crossroads Christian Fellowship". In addition, Daniel assisted with the design of business cards and flyers for the Christian Club. He also has been busy volunteering at his church with activities such as helping out in the nursery and assisting with the children. Excellent work Daniel!

Danielle Fortney (YLF03)

Danielle Fortney (YLF03) received the VADCDT (Virginia Division on Career Development and Transition) Student of the Year award at the 2010, 25th anniversary of the Virginia Transition Forum, in Roanoke, VA earlier this month.

Stephen Joseph (YLF03)

Stephen Joseph (YLF03) delivered a special message at Laughs for Habitat, a Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity (GLHFH) fundraiser. The proceeds from this event will benefit a home being built by GLHFH. Stephen continues to amaze us with is outstanding leadership skills and his motivational speaking delivering a powerful message on what it is like to be a person with a disability. You're a natural Stephen!

Kim Walters (YLF03)

YLF 2003 Student Delegate, Kim Walters (YLF03), Student Finalist in Sports Illustrated contest.

Kim Walters was born without a right forearm, but by the age of 11, she had set three paralympic American records and one world record in swimming at her classification level. She was also the youngest athlete ever to swim on a U.S. team.
Even though she has had to figure out different ways to do everything from opening presents to riding a bicycle, Kim never lets her disability hold her back. "Once people know me," she says, "they know I don't let things stop me." She is a straight-A student who takes top-level honors courses. She plays an adapted trumpet and French horn in the competitive Albemarle High School wind ensemble and marching band and is active in the German and skiing clubs. She also serves on the board of directors for the regional girl scouts council and earned her silver award by running a weekend camp for girls. "It's amazing what she gets done," says Greg Thomas, Albemarle High School Band Director.

"She's an inspiration to her peers, and an inspiration to me."
After her success in swimming at a young age, Kim devoted herself to soccer. She was on her high school junior varsity and a club team, but she stopped playing competitively at age 15 and started fencing, a sport she still enjoys. Always up for a challenge, Kim recently took up rock climbing as well. Her changing tastes in sports are evidence of her desire to prove that she is capable of doing anything-and doing it as well as anyone else.

Kim Walters (YLF03) dedicated a lot of her time volunteering to help with the last election. She spent much time going door to door in the Harrisonburg area and passing out literature at the polls. Kimberly has also been very busy with her studies at William and Mary where she is studying government. Kim was accepted as a Monroe Scholar. Only about 5% of the freshmen class receives this honor. There is a special dorm for Monroe Scholars and they get preference selecting classes. Kim was 1 of 4 freshmen elected to the Student Senate at William and Mary. She worked hard and was very pleased to get elected. Kim also made the Orchestra. She plays the French Horn and is 5th chair. Keep up the hard work Kimberly!

2002

Sarah Burgess (YLF02)

Sarah Burgess (YLF02) continues with her acting and modeling career. She just shot a commercial a few weeks ago and hopes to do more commercials in the future. Sarah will also be going to New York City to be in a fashion show for Curve Style Models. Sarah says "this is a dream come true." In addition to Sarah's career in modeling and acting she continues her job with the after school program at the YMCA.

Tim Moore (YLF02)

Tim Moore (YLF02) Congratulations to Tim for his outstanding second place finish in the "My Political Hero" essay contest. Tim names John Richmond (one of our very own staff members!) as his Political Hero. Tim writes the following: "I met John Richmond in July 2002 when I participated in the Virginia Youth Leadership Forum (YLF.) John was one of my facilitators. John has worked with me on a regular basis since we met. He has been a mentor, teacher and last but not least my political hero. Without the help of my political hero I do not know where I would be today. I am lucky that I don't have to face the challenge of being a student with a disability alone. John has helped me to understand that a person with a disability can reach their goals even though it might take a little longer and might need to be done in a different way than others." Tim won $500 to be used toward his future education goals. We are very proud of you Tim!

Tim Moore (YLF02) receives 2007 Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Award: Tim Moore recognized a need for persons with disabilities to be prepared for emergencies. He has volunteered countless hours of his time and energy toward a project he called "Are You Ready? Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities - Part II," which provides vital information for disaster preparedness that includes "go-bags" for each participant. He serves an average of 33 hours per week as the volunteer project director, and has distributed 212 bags and 85 kits to Virginia citizens. Tim has often been described as "unstoppable" and has worked hard to develop community partners who help provide materials and locations for the events. He has even created his own web site, "A Voice for Gap Kids," at http://www.voiceforgapkids.com. In Tim's words, "Each life experience provided me with challenges and disappointments along with empowering me. I have demonstrated the determination and self-control to never give up on my dreams, goals and vision of making a difference in my life and the lives of other youth with disabilities." He is an inspiration to all through his tireless work.

Tim Moore (YLF02) has put together a slide show with all the photographs he took at the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN) and they have also been posted on the NYLN website. Tim presented at an international conference in New Mexico in October.
He continues to support the American Cancer Society recently volunteering at the "Sock Hop for Hope 2005." Tim has also been working very hard on starting a group called "GAP kids" and plans to be a voice for this group during the General Assembly 2006. Tim Moore (YLF02) continues to share his experience and advocacy skills with "A Voice for Gap Kids." Tim has set up a support group for other students that may have had the same experiences has him in terms of not being able to enroll in end of course, Standards of Learning Exam. Tim also volunteers with many different organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Autism Society of America, Habitat for Humanity, For the Love of Animals and the National Youth Leadership Network. Great job Tim!

Jonathan Kryfka (YLF02)

Jonathan Kryfka (YLF02) has been very busy with college, scouts and the United Methodist Wesley Foundation. Jonathan recently transferred to VCU to pursue a degree in business and marketing. He also just received a promotion at Food Lion where he works. Great job Jonathan!

Marisa Laios (YLF01)

Marisa Laios (YLF01) volunteered her summer to Lost Dog Rescue. She assisted Fair Lakes Pet Smart and Falls Church Pet Smart in setting up, interviewing, and the adoption of animals.
